We begin by defining 4 positions of the hand. #1 is between the thumb and index finger. #2 is between index and middle finger. #3 is between middle and ring finger. #4 is between ring and little finger. I will name the colours as pink and blonde but you can of course use any colours you want. =) |

This is your starting position: Pink in #1 and blonde in #2 in the left hand and vice versa on the other. |

Take the pink from #1 on the left to #3 on the right. The blonde on the left should remain in #2. |

Take the pink #2 from the right hand to #1 on the left. |
![]() |
Move the blonde from #1 right to #3 left and move te remaining pink one on the right to #2. |

Hopefully you now recognice this position from picture 3 above. The only thing we have done is change hands. Now we do the same thing all over again, but from left to right this time. |

#2 left to #1 right. |

I realise this isn't easy but when you've mastered the technique you'll make boxdreads faster than ever before. To help you further I've made a small step-by-step table to help you to see the order of things. Blue repressents the startinghand wit three peaces of hair and red the hand with only one. #1 -> #3 #3 -> #2 |

To get a swirl effekt on your dread you do the same
thing but use this startingposition instead. Another alternative is to hold both of the pink i one hand
and the blonde in the other.

An example of the methode used to make SE dreads. You can do both SE and DE just as easy.
Just back comb four pieces
of hair, boxbraid them and seal with a lighter or a heat clamp.
